The first file contains papers regarding the establishment and conditions of the prize under the Lionel Penrose Trust, plus prize regulations. The following files contain papers regarding the submission and judging of entries (including occasional correspondence regarding the terms of the Trust deed) and/or the essays submitted. Records are not held for all of the years in which the prize was awarded.

Lists of prize-winners can be found in files 01 and 12, although these lists may be inaccurate.

For reasons of confidentiality, currently only file 01 and the list of prize-winners in file 12 are open to researchers.
