Available only to members of the British Psychoanalytical Society.
Newspaper cuttings and other articles collected by Ernest Jones, including items sent by cuttings agencies and his many correspondents. With the exception of the first volume, which appears to have been collated at a later date, the cuttings were pasted into ringbinder volumes which were specially inscribed with the titles shown.
The cuttings demonstrate Jones' wide range of professional interests and reflect early medical, scientific, legal, religious and popular attitudes to psychoanalysis during this period.
The majority of items are from UK publications, including national and local newspapers and academic, medical, professional, political, religious, literary and cultural periodicals, particularly the 'British Medical Journal', 'The Lancet', 'The Times Literary Supplement', 'The Spectator' and 'New Statesman'. A small number of articles are from overseas publications.
All items in these volumes are available to researchers on microfilm.
Series PC-A contains a large number of cuttings collected by various parties including Ernest Jones and staff and members of the Society and Institute, between around 1907 and 1972.
Articles provided by a press cuttings agency.
Articles from UK publications, provided by Durrant's press cuttings agency, which selected articles mentioning the words psychoanalysis, psychoanalyst(s), psychotherapy, psychotherapist(s) and Freud.
The majority of items were taken from national and local newspapers, but other sources include current affairs periodicals, women's magazines, religious newspapers and specialist publications. The articles cover a wide range of subjects, including: mental health issues and forms of treatment; references to the work of practitioners in this field; references to people (particularly well-known figures) receiving treatment; book reviews; criminal cases; religion; and childcare, relationships and lifestyle advice.
The cuttings had not been appraised for items received in error and such items were removed from the collection during cataloguing.
Articles regarding the departure of Dr Jeffrey Masson as research director of the Sigmund Freud archives and responses to his book, 'Freud: The Assault on Truth'. The cuttings are mainly taken from newspapers and magazines from the UK and the USA; there is also one article from the French periodical 'L'Ane', with an incomplete translation.
Also included is an article about research by Peter Swales on the family life of Sigmund Freud (1982).
Some articles were received as cuttings and others as photocopies, but for preservation reasons all items have been copied onto archival quality paper and the originals discarded.
