The first letter is a request, by Menninger, for sources and articles on psychoanalysis for abstraction and use in a neuropsychiatric journal. The correspondence between 1943-1946 is regarding the proceedings of the American Psychoanalytic Association (of which Menninger had been elected President), with particular reference to the resignation of Karen Horney and matters concerning Gregory Zilboorg. The later letters express appreciation of Jones' biography of Freud and his visits to the USA.

The letters from James Jackson Putnam are regarding the early development of the psychoanalytic movement. There is also one letter from his daughter, Marian C Putnam, following his death. Also included are typed extracts of letters from Sigmund Freud to Putnam dated 1911-1915.
