Letters from George and Edith Lawton regarding research for Jones' biography of Freud, including a copy of a letter from Freud to Hereward Carrington regarding Freud's position on the study of the occult. There is also a letter, in German, from Freud to a Baron Tinty.

The first letter is a request, by Menninger, for sources and articles on psychoanalysis for abstraction and use in a neuropsychiatric journal. The correspondence between 1943-1946 is regarding the proceedings of the American Psychoanalytic Association (of which Menninger had been elected President), with particular reference to the resignation of Karen Horney and matters concerning Gregory Zilboorg. The later letters express appreciation of Jones' biography of Freud and his visits to the USA.

The correspondence is chiefly regarding the administration, procedures and membership of the Swiss Psychoanalytical Society and the acquisition of psychoanalytic texts for the society via Jones.

Correspondence primarily regarding the content, funding and management of the 'International Journal of Psychoanalysis', plus the meetings and dealings of the American and New York Psychoanalytic Societies with reference to matters concerning Gregory Zilboorg. The later correspondence concerns research for Jones' biography of Freud with particular reference to H W Frink.

The letters from James Jackson Putnam are regarding the early development of the psychoanalytic movement. There is also one letter from his daughter, Marian C Putnam, following his death. Also included are typed extracts of letters from Sigmund Freud to Putnam dated 1911-1915.

The earliest, and majority, of the letters are from Riviere and are personal in nature, regarding Jones' analysis of her. The later items include some personal letters and some concerning both Jones' essay on Hamlet and his biography of Freud.

A series of letters from Roos (and his secretary) regarding funding for a stairwell lift for Jones who was incapacitated at this time.

The earlier correspondence concerns the translation and publication of psychoanalytic texts. The later letters, from 1950 to 1957, are predominantly discussions of Jones' biography of Freud and Strachey's translation of the 'Standard Edition'.
